Cyril Ramaphosa investigates foreign influence in South African xenophobic violence

President Cyril Ramaphosa informed the National Assembly that security agencies are investigating whether external forces have played a role in instigating recent violence against foreign nationals in South Africa. Ramaphosa noted that some African governments have indicated that a portion of the unrest may be propelled and instigated from outside the country to destabilize the nation.

During parliamentary questioning, Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), accused the government of failing to protect migrants and questioned why certain perpetrators appeared to act without fear of arrest, sometimes in the presence of police. Malema argued that the violence has damaged South Africa’s international relations and its pan-African standing.

In response, Ramaphosa promised judicial action, stating that those responsible for violence, particularly those causing injury or death, will be arrested and prosecuted. He emphasized that the government rejects xenophobia and discrimination, and is engaging in discussions with other African nations to address the crisis.
