Cystic fibrosis patients' families protest medicine shortages in Caracas

Families of patients with cystic fibrosis gathered in front of the Ministry of Health in Caracas on September 8 to demand the regular supply of high-cost medications and the reactivation of the National Cystic Fibrosis Program.

Protesters highlighted that essential treatments, including Kaftrio and Kalydeco modulators, pancreatic enzymes, and broad-spectrum antibiotics, are increasingly difficult to access. The cost of maintaining treatment is estimated to range between $3,000 and $5,000 monthly, a burden many families cannot afford. One parent noted that a single cycle of the antibiotic tobramycin can cost approximately $1,600.

Demonstrators reported that the lack of medication and specialized medical personnel has led to multiple deaths this year, including a member of the Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra. Rosario Diuwardi, director of Health Programs for Respiratory Diseases at the Ministry of Health, has committed to responding to these demands.
