Czchów Reservoir siltation prompts parliamentary inquiry

Polish MP Józefa Szczurek-Żelazko has submitted an official parliamentary inquiry to the Minister of Infrastructure regarding the deteriorating condition of the Czchów Reservoir. The reservoir, located on the Dunajec River, is facing critical levels of siltation, with sand, gravel, and mud accumulating along the shores and at river mouths.

The reservoir serves vital functions, including flood protection, water retention, environmental preservation, and supporting the local economy and tourism in southern Małopolska. Due to the material transported by the Dunajec, the average depth of the reservoir is drastically decreasing, threatening its capacity and strategic utility.

In her inquiry, Szczurek-Żelazko calls for immediate action, including updated bathymetric studies to determine the exact extent of the siltation and the volume of accumulated sediment. She is also seeking information on whether the ministry has a revitalization program, a schedule for dredging, and potential funding sources from the state budget or European funds to restore the reservoir's original capacity.
