Czech Aero L-39NG Skyfox identified as cost-effective NATO anti-drone solution

The Aero L-39NG Skyfox, produced by Czech manufacturer Aero Vodochody, has been identified by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) as a highly suitable platform for NATO's anti-drone operations. As Russian drones increasingly violate the airspace of alliance members like Romania, Poland, and the Baltic states, the cost of using advanced fighter jets like the F-16 or F-35 to intercept these targets has become unsustainable.

The Skyfox offers a significantly more economical alternative, with hourly operating costs approximately seven times lower than an F-16 and nine times lower than an F-35. In August 2026 testing, the aircraft successfully intercepted simulated Geran-4 drones traveling at speeds up to 270 knots, while its maneuverability allows it to engage slower targets like the Gerbera and Geran-2.

Diplomatic sources suggest interest from the Czech government in sales, with specific interest emerging from Estonia and other Baltic nations sharing borders with Russia. Aero Vodochody has confirmed that it views the Baltic region as a strategically important market for the Skyfox solution.
