Czech agricultural yields decline due to drought
Prolonged drought and high summer temperatures have significantly reduced agricultural yields in the Czech Republic, impacting both the wine and potato sectors.
The Czech Wine Fund reports that the current harvest is approximately 30 to 40 percent lower than the long-term average. While some regions like Litoměřice saw declines of only 10 to 15 percent, others, such as Velkopavlovice, experienced losses of up to 70 percent due to drought and hail. Despite lower volumes, the warm weather has aided the ripening of grapes, particularly red varieties, potentially leading to high-quality wines.
Similarly, the Czech Potato Growers Association expects a 20 to 30 percent decrease in potato yields compared to last year. Some producers may see production drops exceeding one-third. The shortage, combined with rising costs for fuel and wages, is expected to drive consumer prices higher as the market shifts from fresh harvests to stored produce.
