Czech and Burkina Faso men face years in prison for multi‑million fraud schemes
Police in the Czech Republic say a 23‑year‑old man used false identities on online marketplaces, operating more than 40 bank accounts and several social‑media profiles to demand advance payments for goods he never owned. Over a 16‑month period he defrauded victims of more than 1.1 million Czech crowns, and a new court case could raise his sentence from the previously served fifteen months to up to five years.
In Burkina Faso, investigators describe another victim who answered a televised advertisement, was contacted by a person calling himself Martin K., and was persuaded to invest over 4.6 million Czech crowns between February and May. The man transferred money to accounts abroad and withdrew 500 thousand crowns on the fraudster’s instructions before the scheme collapsed, leaving him with no funds. Police have classified the case as a large‑scale investment fraud.
Both cases illustrate how scammers exploit online platforms and media ads to lure individuals into pre‑payment or investment schemes, prompting police actions in their respective countries.
