Czech-Polish border disinformation campaign uses AI and fake accounts
A sophisticated disinformation campaign using artificial intelligence and fake social media accounts attempted to incite a border conflict between the Czech Republic and Poland. The operation targeted the Cieszyn-Silesia region, using a fake persona named ‘Adam Sikora’ to claim that Poland was attempting to annex Czech territory.
Investigators found that the campaign employed several advanced tactics, including AI-generated images of non-existent homes to simulate local distress and the impersonation of high-ranking diplomats, such as the Czech ambassador to Poland. The operation also utilized paid Facebook advertisements to promote a fraudulent demonstration in Trinec.
Czech President Petr Pavel condemned the campaign as a ‘targeted provocation’ and emphasized the strength of existing bilateral relations. While the Polish institute NASK noted that the methods align with known Russian influence operations, definitive attribution has not yet been established. Intelligence services in both nations are currently investigating the matter.
