Czech and Slovak municipalities contest wind energy expansion plans

Municipalities in the Czech Republic are preparing legal challenges against the government's plan to establish acceleration zones for wind farms. Mayors in the Olomouc and Moravian-Silesian regions argue that these zones, intended to speed up renewable energy permitting, undermine local self-governance and could negatively impact the landscape, living quality, and property values.

In Slovakia, Prime Minister Robert Fico has addressed similar concerns regarding wind energy development. While the Slovak government must formally prepare conditions for wind energy to meet obligations under the Recovery and Resilience Plan—avoiding potential financial sanctions of nearly half a billion euros—Fico stated that the government will not push for wind farm construction. He emphasized that nuclear energy remains the national priority and guaranteed that local municipalities retain the final decision-making power over any wind energy projects in their territories.
