Czech Army investigated for monitoring citizens' social media views
The Czech Ministry of Defence has confirmed that the Military Police investigated two military projects, titled ‘Karel’ and ‘Volby 2025’. The investigation centered on suspicions that military personnel were tasked with collecting personal data from social media users and monitoring their political views, including opinions on the war in Ukraine and various government officials.
Brigadier General Radek Haratek, the commander of information and cyber forces, was identified as the individual issuing tasks within these projects. Following the investigation, which found potential violations of military regulations and command rules, disciplinary actions were taken, and the Minister of Defence ordered Haratek’s dismissal from his position.
While the investigation identified regulatory breaches, authorities stated that no criminal offense or direct interference in democratic processes was proven.
