Czech Association of Insurers launches road safety campaign
The Czech Association of Insurers (ČAP) has launched a new road safety prevention campaign titled ‘Normální řízení zabíjí’ (Normal Driving Kills). The initiative aims to encourage self-reflection among drivers by highlighting risky behaviors that are often normalized or excused as mere circumstances rather than recognized as dangerous offenses.
A representative survey of 1,017 Czech drivers revealed a discrepancy in how motorists judge themselves versus others. While 92% of respondents consider insufficient following distance to be dangerous, 51% admit to not maintaining it. Additionally, 46% of drivers would read a text message while driving, and 39% would exceed the speed limit if the surrounding traffic was moving at a similar pace.
The campaign utilizes television, online media, outdoor installations, and a documentary film directed by Vít Klusák. It addresses common justifications for risky behavior, such as rushing, overestimating driving skills, or questioning the validity of speed limits. Last year, police recorded over 17,000 accidents caused by inattention and over 11,000 related to inappropriate speed, contributing to 375 driver-related fatalities.
