Czech authorities warn of increased cottage thefts during winter
Police and municipal authorities in the Czech Republic are warning cottage and garden owners about the increased risk of theft as winter approaches and recreational properties are left unoccupied.
In Ostrava, municipal guards have launched regular patrols in cottage and allotment areas, utilizing officers on horseback and service dogs to monitor these locations throughout the winter season. Authorities emphasize that thieves often target electronics, tools, bicycles, and food supplies.
To mitigate risks, officials recommend several security measures: • Removing valuables from the premises. • Ensuring all windows, shutters, and doors are securely locked. • Installing security systems such as motion detectors, cameras, or timed lighting. • Removing items from gardens, such as ladders or axes, that could facilitate a break-in. • Disconnecting electrical appliances and turning off water supplies.
Community cooperation is also highlighted as a vital deterrent. Neighbors are encouraged to monitor suspicious activity and exchange contact information to assist with irregular visits. Residents should report suspicious movement to the police via line 158 or municipal police via line 156.
