Czech business confidence falls in September amid mixed outlooks

The Czech Statistical Office reported a decline in business confidence for September, with the index dropping by 1.8 points to 98.4. This decrease was observed in the industry, services, and construction sectors, while confidence in trade saw an increase. The decline is largely attributed to weaker industrial demand and deteriorating sentiment within the services sector.

Despite these figures, the Czech Chamber of Commerce suggests that the data does not indicate a widespread shift toward pessimism among Czech companies. According to the Chamber's barometer, which tracks member expectations, a majority of firms anticipate improvements in the second half of the year. Specifically, 28.3% of companies expect overall development to improve compared to 18.8% expecting a decline. Additionally, 29.2% of firms anticipate growth in turnover, while 19.7% expect a decrease.

Analyst Roman Renda noted that while the September data should be taken seriously, it should be viewed within a longer time series rather than as a definitive trend. The Chamber warned that businesses continue to face significant risks, including high costs, weak economic growth in Germany, international trade barriers, and global geopolitical uncertainty.
