Czech business investors donate millions to political parties

A group of entrepreneurs and investors has provided millions of Czech koruna to several political parties to support Senate election campaigns. The funding was distributed through an association involving investors such as Jan Barta, Martin Vohánka, Pavel Šebora, Libor Winkler, and Petr Košťál.

The donations were contingent upon specific parties forming coalitions in 13 selected Senate districts, including Cheb, Děčín, and Ostrava, where liberal-democratic trends have historically been successful. Total support reached 3 million CZK for these specific coalition-based districts. Individual distributions included 3 million CZK for the STAN movement, 1.8 million CZK for ODS, 1.2 million CZK for KDU-ČSL, and 600,000 CZK each for TOP 09 and the Pirates.

Additionally, Jan Barta, co-owner of Pale Fire Capital, donated 3 million CZK to the Praha Sobě movement for its metropolitan campaign. While the donors frame these contributions as a means to ensure the continuity and security of the Senate within the constitutional system, critics argue that such large-scale political investments by wealthy individuals allow them to exert disproportionate influence over policy and economic interests.
