Czech Chamber of Deputies faces scrutiny over media restrictions and police incident

The Czech Chamber of Deputies is facing criticism regarding new restrictions on journalists and a recent police intervention within the building. Investigations are underway following an incident where police removed a group of people from the parliamentary gallery. While some individuals were shouting at lawmakers during a debate on media fees, witnesses claim that even those merely holding banners were forcibly removed without disrupting proceedings.

Interior Minister Vít Metnar stated that the police will conduct an internal audit of the incident, noting that officers issued warnings before taking action. Meanwhile, journalists are reporting significant new limitations on their ability to film within the parliamentary complex. The Chamber has cited security protocols and the protection of personnel as the basis for these rules, which restrict filming to specific designated areas.

However, inquiries into the Chamber's media department revealed that there is no independent professional analysis or formal study supporting the necessity of these specific filming restrictions. The administration maintains that the rules are a continuous response to ensuring the orderly functioning and safety of the legislative body.
