Czech child support non-payment penalties under debate

Representatives from child support associations are debating proposed government measures to increase penalties for non-payment of alimony. While some advocates suggest that the threat of criminal sanctions could serve as a deterrent and improve prevention, others argue against the criminalization of non-payment.

Critics of stricter penalties suggest that imprisonment is not an effective solution for ensuring children receive support. Instead, they propose alternative punishments, such as house arrest, and emphasize the need for better cooperation with non-payers to resolve the issue, noting that many current civil enforcement actions through bailiffs are unsuccessful.
