Czech cinema history: Jaroslav Mareš and the legacy of Menzel and Hrabal
Historical profiles highlight the lives and careers of significant figures in Czech cinema. Jaroslav Mareš, a distinguished member of the National Theatre, had a prolific career featuring over one hundred film roles. His work spanned from his 1946 debut in ‘Nezbedný bakalář’ to notable performances in films such as ‘Černý prapor’ (1958), ‘Anděl na horách’, and ‘Ikaria XB 1’.
In the realm of filmmaking, director Jiří Menzel and writer Bohumil Hrabal faced significant pressure from socialist censors. Their 1966 Oscar-winning film ‘Ostře sledované vlaky’ is celebrated today, but their 1969 film ‘Skřivánci na niticích’ was banned and kept in a vault for twenty years due to its depiction of the harsh realities of the 1950s in Czechoslovakia. The film did not receive a public premiere until 1990.
