Czech cities Brno and Mělník record extreme heat, perceived temperatures exceed 50 °C

Scientists from the Institute of Global Change Research measured a perceived temperature of more than 50 °C in Brno on 28 June during a June heat wave. Air temperature reached 40.5 °C and the pavement heated above 52 °C. The measurement walk covered streets such as Kapitána Jaroše, Koliště and Šilingrovo náměstí, showing that shaded, greener areas were up to ten degrees cooler. The city opened two historic halls at the New Town Hall as cooling shelters.

In the nearby town of Mělník, the same heat wave produced severe agricultural damage. Local farmer Pavel Feix reported that celery and kohlrabi yields fell by about one‑third, while gooseberries turned white and rotted. He said, “Na polích je to znát hodně… u celeru a kedluben je ztráta zhruba třetinová,” and noted that overall crop yields were roughly half of normal. Residents and vendors also described the heat as an unprecedented extreme affecting daily life and local businesses.
