Slovakia holds simultaneous local and regional elections

Slovakia conducted simultaneous local and regional elections on Saturday, October 24, 2026. The voting process included elections for mayors, village heads, municipal council members, and heads of eight self-governing regions.

In the regional contests, several incumbents successfully defended their positions. Branislav Becík was reelected as the head of the Nitra region with 50.57% of the vote, winning in all seven districts. Jozef Viskupič retained his position as the head of the Trnava region with 53.75% of the vote. In the Prešov region, Milan Majerský secured leadership with 48.8% of the vote, while František Oľha was reelected as the mayor of Prešov.

In Bratislava, Matúš Vallo was reelected as mayor. The elections were noted as a significant test for the popularity of Prime Minister Robert Fico’s governing coalition ahead of next year's parliamentary elections.

Technical issues were reported in several locations. Printing errors on ballot papers led to voting delays or interruptions in Breziny, Hraň, Turzovka, and Lúka. Additionally, incorrect ballot types were identified in certain Bratislava districts, including Karlova Ves and Petržalka. The State Commission for Elections extended the moratorium for candidates in several regions to facilitate the resolution of these issues.
