Czech cities initiate major library reconstruction and expansion projects
The cities of Znojmo and Plzeň have launched significant projects to modernize and expand their library services.
In Znojmo, the city is issuing a tender for the redesign of a former post office on Horní náměstí. The project aims to transform the neo-Renaissance building into a library and community center featuring a literary café, lecture hall, community workshop, and recording studio. The plan includes creating an atrium with greenery and a passage between Horní náměstí and Horní Česká street while preserving historical elements like cast-iron columns and original staircases. The timeline and final costs remain to be determined based on financing.
Meanwhile, the main building of the Plzeň City Library has closed for a two-year reconstruction project. The revitalization, estimated to cost 250 million CZK (with the city contributing 191 million CZK), will create barrier-free study spaces, a new gallery, and improved facilities for cultural and community programs. To prepare for the closure, librarians relocated over 180,000 library units and 630 shelving units. During the construction, services will be maintained through the city's network of district libraries.
