Czech climber killed by rockfall on Mont Blanc
A Czech climber in his forties died on Thursday after being struck by falling rocks while ascending Mont Blanc in the French Alps. The incident occurred in the Goûter Couloir, a section of the classic route located near Saint-Gervais in the Haute-Savoie region.
The victim was climbing with a companion when the rockfall occurred. The companion, who was uninjured but in shock, alerted emergency services. Despite rescue efforts, the man could not be revived. The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the death and expressed condolences to the family.
The Goûter Couloir is frequently referred to as the ‘corridor of death’ due to its high risk of rockfalls. This danger has been exacerbated by high temperatures, which previously led to the temporary closure of two mountain refuges in August. This tragedy follows a similar incident in July where two other Czech climbers were killed in the same area.
