Czech commentator Robert Záruba addresses political pressure on media

Sports commentator Robert Záruba has addressed potential threats to the independence of Czech public media. During a book launch for ‘Život v přímém přenosu’, Záruba stated that while a change in funding models might not trigger his departure, he would consider leaving if there were direct political pressure to influence or restrict editorial content.

This discussion follows comments made by MP Josef Váňa, who criticized the efficiency of Czech Television (ČT) during a parliamentary debate regarding the abolition of television and radio license fees. Váňa claimed that ČT crews often arrive in multiple vehicles, citing it as an example of inefficiency. Záruba responded by explaining that a standard field reporting crew consists of two people: a reporter and a cameraman.

The debate highlights growing tensions surrounding the proposed transition of public media funding from license fees to the state budget, a move that employees of ČT and Czech Radio fear could compromise their journalistic autonomy.
