Czech courts issue major rulings in fire, murder, and sexual assault cases

Several significant court rulings have been issued in the Czech Republic involving high-profile criminal cases.

The Prague High Court has definitively acquitted Jiří Lobotka, a former volunteer ranger, of charges related to starting a massive forest fire in Bohemian Switzerland National Park in July 2022. Despite Lobotka's initial confessions, the court ruled that guilt could not be proven, noting that the fire could have been caused by tourists or negligence.

In a separate case, the Olomouc High Court upheld a 27.5-year prison sentence for Patrik Cigoš. Cigoš was convicted of the brutal murder of his partner in Mírov, an attack that occurred only three weeks after his conditional release from prison for a similar crime.

Additionally, the Prague Municipal Court has overturned an acquittal for former MP Dominik Feri in a sexual assault case involving a minor. The case will be retried by the Prague 3 District Court following a legal dispute regarding the definition of rape and a ruling by the Constitutional Court.

Finally, a man identified as Milan A. was sentenced to eight years in prison for the prolonged physical and psychological abuse of his wife, which included instances of using a stun gun and exposure to freezing temperatures.
