Czech culture: Legacy of ‘Mareček, passou!’ and theater shifts

The classic Czech comedy film ‘Mareček, passou!’, which premiered in 1976, was inspired by the real-life teaching experiences of its authors, Zdeněk Svěrák and Ladislav Smoljak. The script drew heavily from their memories of students, including the character Hliník, a fictional pupil who became so iconic that a museum dedicated to him, the ‘Hliníkárium’, was established in Humpolec in 2006. To this day, fans continue to send postcards to the character’s imaginary address.

In contemporary Czech theater news, performer Jaroslav Dušek has announced his move to the Semafor Theatre. This transition follows the departure of Boris Gaydečka and his team from the Lávka club, as the building returns to the Prague City Hall for reconstruction. Dušek expressed that performing at Semafor is a great honor, noting his long-standing connection to the venue and its founder, Jiří Suchý.
