Czech Culture Minister faces backlash over new funding policies

Czech Culture Minister Ota Klempíř is facing significant criticism from the artistic community following the government's approval of a new cultural policy. The Association of Independent Theatres has expressed serious concerns regarding new conditions for ministry grants, suggesting they could threaten artistic freedom and lead to self-censorship.

The Association argues that the ministry should not act as an arbiter of artistic content or interpretations. They noted that under the proposed conditions, classic works containing controversial views or social critiques—such as those by Shakespeare, Mark Twain, or Jaroslav Hašek—could be at risk. They have called for the removal of disputed provisions and a change in how the ministry communicates with the cultural sector.

In addition to institutional opposition, filmmaker Jiří Mádl has publicly criticized the minister, stating he does not wish to be like him. This follows recent incidents where Klempíř faced vocal protests and booing from audiences at public events, including the International Folklore Festival in Strážnice.
