Czech Culture Minister faces backlash over new strategy

Czech Minister of Culture Oto Klempíř is facing widespread criticism from both government ministries and the cultural sector regarding his proposed cultural strategy. Over 60 professional organizations and associations, led by the Cultural and Creative Federation, have called for the government to withdraw the document, arguing it lacks proper analysis, participation, and implementation plans.

Critics express concerns over the potential politicization of cultural decision-making and the erosion of professional expertise. The Cultural and Creative Federation suggests that the government should instead focus on fulfilling the existing State Cultural Policy 2026–2030+.

Internal government opposition has also emerged. The Ministry of Finance noted that the proposal impacts the competencies of other ministries and local governments without accounting for increased budget requirements. The Ministry of Interior criticized the lack of analytical data, while the Ministry of Education described the plan as too general, requesting a concrete implementation schedule and financial framework. Despite this, Klempíř has defended the strategy, stating it is “perfect” and built on real foundations, asserting that the responsibility for cultural policy lies with the minister rather than professional associations.
