Frankfurt Book Fair: Czech Minister faces protests during opening
The opening of the 78th Frankfurt Book Fair, featuring the Czech Republic as the guest of honor, was marked by political tension. Czech Culture Minister Oto Klempíř faced significant backlash, including booing, whistling, and heckling from the audience during his speech. Protesters specifically cited his past cooperation with the communist-era secret police (StB) and criticized current Czech cultural policies.
In contrast, Czech author Radka Denemarková received standing ovations after her speech. She criticized the presence of former StB collaborators in the government and remarked that while ministers come and go, literature remains. She also addressed the intersection of politics and literature in a changing Europe.
The fair serves as a major platform for Czech cultural diplomacy, with 75 authors and numerous publishers participating to showcase contemporary Czech literature to the international market. While the opening was turbulent, organizers and authors view the event as a vital opportunity to expand the reach of Czech writers beyond the domestic market.
