Czech cyclists confront safety hazards on bike lanes and roads

In the Czech Republic, cyclists increasingly share bike lanes and streets with pedestrians and foreign visitors who ignore traffic rules, use mobile phones while walking and often block the path. The situation is described as a mix of Czech citizens and newcomers walking against the flow on a dedicated cycle track, creating hazardous conditions.

A separate report from the Příbram region highlights driver‑related risks. The law requires a minimum 1.5 m passing distance (1 m in 30 km/h zones), yet many motorists fail to give cyclists enough space, ignore right‑of‑way, honk aggressively, and open car doors without looking. These behaviours, combined with narrow roads and sudden turns, raise serious safety concerns for daily commuters who rely on bicycles for work and errands.
