Czech D3 Highway Section Opens at Austrian Border, Reducing Local Traffic

The Road and Motorways Directorate (ŘSD) opened a new 3.5‑km segment of the D3 highway between Nažidla and Dolní Dvořiště, reaching the Czech‑Austrian border. The project cost about CZK 1.04 billion, with roughly 60 % financed by the European Union. It includes three bridges, noise‑barrier walls and a grade‑separated junction, and implements special water‑treatment measures to protect the endangered pearl mussel in the Malše river.

Minister of Transport Ivan Bednárik said the opening will divert transit traffic away from the village of Dolní Dvořiště, lowering noise, emissions and improving safety for residents. About 20,000 vehicles a day are expected during the holiday season. Work continues on the remaining Czech section and on a missing few hundred metres of highway on the Austrian side, which is planned for completion in cooperation with Austria by 2032. The full D3 route, 170 km long, is targeted for completion by 2031.
