Czech Education Minister Robert Plaga faces scrutiny over school reforms

Czech Education Minister Robert Plaga is facing criticism regarding both fiscal management and proposed structural changes within the school system. Critics argue that his plan to redistribute teaching assistants using a mathematical formula based on school size and class occupancy is a cost-cutting measure rather than a genuine attempt to improve inclusive education. This proposal could potentially save approximately 750 million CZK annually but may deprive schools in high-need regions of necessary support.

Separately, Minister Plaga has sparked debate by suggesting a reconsideration of the timing of summer holidays. He noted that the current July-August schedule was standardized in 1925 to align with agricultural cycles, questioning if a different distribution of time off throughout the year would better suit modern families and schools. Opposition MP Renáta Zajíčková criticized the focus on holiday timing, suggesting the Minister should instead prioritize systemic issues such as the rising number of students leaving secondary school without qualifications and the lack of funding for science and inclusive education.
