Czech education sector faces funding concerns over school subsidies and university budgets

Czech religious and higher education institutions are facing financial challenges due to government budget decisions. Prague Archbishop Stanislav Přibyl warned that attempting to limit subsidies for religious schools would be unwise, noting that the church lacks the funds to finance these institutions entirely on its own. He emphasized that religious schools provide a public good and fill gaps where the state has not fulfilled its role.

Simultaneously, the Czech Conference of Rectors has raised alarms regarding funding for public universities. Milan Pospíšil, chairman of the conference, stated that the proposed budget for next year—35.9 billion CZK—is approximately 293 million CZK less than this year. This reduction may force universities to limit student intake to maintain educational quality. Experts warn that without increased funding, a significant number of high school graduates may be forced into the labor market instead of pursuing higher education.
