Czech education system faces funding and structural debates

The Czech education system faces significant challenges, including long-term underfunding and a shortage of teachers. Recent political discussions have highlighted various controversial proposals and issues within the sector.

Education Minister Robert Plaga sparked debate by questioning the necessity of two-month summer holidays in July and August. Meanwhile, SPD politician Tomio Okamura proposed abolishing the 9th grade by 2029 to save 50 billion CZK annually, a suggestion that received support from Andrej Babiš but was criticized by experts.

Beyond budget and structural debates, the system is struggling to manage upcoming large student cohorts. High schools currently lack sufficient capacity, forcing students to pay for private preparatory courses to succeed in admissions. Additionally, universities are warning about potential budget cuts as they attempt to respond to demographic shifts.
