Czech Environment Minister pivots to water policy amid remediation controversy

Czech Environment Minister Igor Červený has announced a strategic shift for the Ministry of the Environment, prioritizing water management and drought prevention over carbon dioxide reduction efforts. Červený stated that the ministry will no longer act as an obstacle to the ministries of agriculture and transport regarding permits for water retention projects. He noted that the ministry has supported 33,000 projects totaling over 32 billion CZK to combat drought since 2014.

However, the minister faces scrutiny regarding the management of the Heřmanice spoil tip remediation near Ostrava. Reports indicate that the ministry intervened to prevent a potential 25 million CZK fine against the company Ridera Bohemia for using unauthorized materials. Following intervention by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, the responsibility for the remediation was transferred to the state enterprise DIAMO. While Červený maintains that the ministry only changed its investigation mechanism rather than ending it, official documents suggest his descriptions of the situation may be misleading.
