Czech government renews National Coalition Against Drought
The Czech government has officially renewed the National Coalition Against Drought, led by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, to address critical water shortages. The decision follows reports that the country has experienced its lowest rainfall since 1961 and that approximately 70 percent of monitored groundwater is in a state of strong or extreme drought.
Key government actions include the allocation of 4 billion CZK to bolster drought response efforts, supplementing existing funds. The administration also plans to introduce legislation to accelerate the construction and approval of 20 strategic water reservoirs. Additionally, the Prime Minister has tasked ministries and the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute with mapping 500 specific sites experiencing rapid water loss to enable targeted interventions.
The coalition will include ministers from the agriculture and environment sectors, along with scientific experts such as bioclimatologist Miroslav Trnka and hydrologists. While the government emphasizes its long-term commitment to water management, opposition members and environmental organizations have raised concerns, with some calling for a focus on landscape retention and wetland restoration rather than solely on large-scale dam construction.
