Czech Environmental Inspectorate intensifies hydropower plant inspections

The Czech Environmental Inspectorate (ČIŽP) has intensified inspections of small hydropower plants (MVE) across the Czech Republic following an exceptionally dry summer. This extraordinary inspection campaign, launched on September 1, 2026, follows recommendations from the Central Drought Commission.

Since the start of the campaign, inspectors have audited 90 facilities, identifying potential deficiencies in 25 cases. Since the beginning of 2026, the ČIŽP has inspected a total of 173 small hydropower plants, with 46 operators identified as having violated operating conditions or being subject to further investigation. The inspections focus on ensuring compliance with permitted water withdrawals and minimum residual flows to protect aquatic ecosystems and downstream water users.

To improve efficiency and safety, inspectors are now utilizing drones to monitor difficult or inaccessible locations and to collect visual documentation. ČIŽP Director Pavel Straka emphasized that during periods of drought, strict adherence to operating conditions is critical to prevent damage to the water ecosystem.
