Czech experts advance safety standards and civil defense measures
Experts are focusing on enhancing public safety through updated European security standards and improved civil defense infrastructure in the Czech Republic.
Under the leadership of Czech experts, the CEN/TC 325 committee is developing new safety standards based on the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) strategy. These EN 14383 standards aim to prevent criminal activity by influencing urban design to deter potential offenders. The initiative is supported by the Czech Ministry of the Interior and the Czech Agency for Standardization, and involves collaboration with the International CPTED Association.
Regarding civil protection, current estimates suggest that existing functional shelters in the Czech Republic can only accommodate approximately three percent of the population. Civil defense expert Marcela Škuchtanová noted that while Switzerland leads Europe with capacity for 100 percent of its citizens, the Czech Republic faces a significant gap. Suggestions for improvement include the revitalization of existing shelters and the construction of new, multifunctional facilities that could serve as parking or leisure spaces during peacetime but be quickly converted for emergency use.
