Czech film Pramen explores medical ethics and historical sterilization

The film Pramen, directed by Ivan Ostrochovský, examines the medical environment of Czechoslovak hospitals during the 1980s. The story follows an ambitious doctor, played by Anna Geislerová, who operates within a system that performs abortions and the sterilization of Roma women as part of a structured plan.

Through her interactions with a young orderly, the protagonist undergoes a personal awakening toward humanity. While the film's production involved a non-traditional method of re-shooting scenes and endings over a five-year period, it addresses the heavy historical reality of systemic sterilization practices.
