Czech film 'Vesničko má středisková' celebrates 40th anniversary, Otík's house identified

The 1986 comedy Vesničko má středisková, directed by Jiří Menzel and written by Zdeněk Svěrák, marked its 40th anniversary this summer. The film drew about 4.5 million viewers in Czechoslovakia, became the most‑attended domestic title of the 1980s, earned a jury prize at the Montreal festival and was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

To commemorate the milestone, Czech media ran a quiz on the film’s details and reported that the real‑life house of the beloved character Otík Rákosník has been located in the village of Křečovice. The discovery has attracted tourists to the site, where they can see the setting that inspired the story of the simple hauler whose move to Prague drives the plot.

The anniversary has revived public interest in the classic, highlighting its lasting humor and cultural significance in the Czech Republic.
