Czech football championship adopts new timing rules amid implementation challenges

The Czech football championship introduced several rule changes aimed at speeding up play and curbing simulation. A five‑second visual countdown is now required for standard situations such as throw‑ins and goal kicks; failure to restart within the limit results in a loss of possession. Substitutions must be completed within ten seconds, otherwise the incoming player must wait at least one minute before entering. After a medical assessment, the treated player must remain off the field for a full minute, with exemptions only for goalkeepers, serious head injuries, or specific fouls.

Karl Vacha, the current manager of the second‑division club Hluboká and the league’s all‑time top scorer, welcomed the changes, saying they improve game flow and help eliminate simulation. He warned, however, that consistent application could be difficult, noting past inconsistencies in timing enforcement by referees. Former player and club official Libor Šolc expressed similar support for the reforms, though he also highlighted practical challenges in adopting them nationwide.
