Czech forests face renewed bark beetle threat amid drought

Czech forests are facing renewed threats from bark beetle infestations, exacerbated by recent periods of extreme heat and drought. These environmental conditions have weakened coniferous stands, making them more susceptible to pests. Forestry experts report that the beetles are exhibiting 'sister swarming' behavior, where a single generation can attack multiple trees within a year, potentially spreading the infestation to new areas.

To combat this, foresters are utilizing drones to monitor large or inaccessible areas and are implementing rapid removal of infested trees to prevent further population growth. In response to previous large-scale calamities, Lesy České republiky (Forests of the Czech Republic) is hosting a public event on October 3 across seven locations in the country. The initiative aims to showcase the progress of forest restoration efforts, highlighting the growth of more diverse and resilient forests planted with the help of thousands of volunteers following past infestations.
