Czech General Karel Řehka Ends Military Tenure, Mulls Senate Run

General Karel Řehka concluded his term as chief of the Czech Republic's General Staff, handing the post to General Miroslav Hlaváč. During his tenure he emphasized public communication on defence, especially after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and pushed for higher defence spending, noting that the Czech Republic still falls short of the NATO 2 % target.

In his farewell interview Řehka said he remains engaged in public affairs and is considering running as an independent candidate for the Senate, likely in the Plzeň region. He highlighted that his future agenda would focus on defence and security issues. The prospect of his candidacy has sparked speculation about a possible political career after a distinguished military service.

The discussion comes ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, where Czech defence priorities and funding will be under scrutiny.
