Czech girl battles Type II spinal muscular atrophy

A young girl from the Českolipska region is fighting Type II spinal muscular atrophy, a severe genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle weakness. After initially showing symptoms such as lack of responsiveness and physical instability at eight months old, she was diagnosed at Motol University Hospital.

At nineteen months, she received Zolgensma, one of the world's most expensive medications. The treatment was complicated by liver failure, requiring a three-month hospital stay and the use of corticosteroids. Following her recovery, she has undergone intensive rehabilitation, including muscle exercises, swimming, and hippotherapy. Through these efforts, she has begun to regain strength and is able to take a few steps using a walker or crutches.
