Czech Government approves 200 million CZK subsidy for large agribusinesses

The Czech government has approved an annual allocation of 200 million CZK to support crop and livestock insurance for large-scale agricultural enterprises. To qualify for this new program through the Support and Guarantee Agricultural and Forestry Fund (PGRLF), applicants must employ at least 250 people or meet specific high-turnover and balance sheet thresholds, effectively excluding small and medium-sized family farms.

The Ministry of Agriculture defends the move as a measure to ensure food production stability and price consistency. However, critics, including shadow agriculture minister Petr Bendl, have pointed out a contradiction in priorities: while 200 million CZK is allocated to large agribusinesses, the budget for drought mitigation is set to decrease from 1.5 billion CZK to 1 billion CZK.

Opposition leaders, such as Ivan Bartoš, have criticized the decision as favoring massive corporate holdings and have signaled an intent to contact European Commission authorities regarding the impact on competition. Concerns have also been raised by the Ministry of Finance regarding the potential deepening of the agricultural sector's budget deficit.
