Czech Government Approves Reform for Teaching Assistants
The Czech government has unanimously approved an amendment to change how teaching assistants function in primary schools. The reform, proposed by Minister of Education Robert Plaga, aims to move away from the current system of assigning specific assistants to individual students with special educational needs.
Under the new model, school principals will be granted greater flexibility to decide how to deploy assistants based on the school's overall needs. The Ministry of Education argues that the existing system is administratively burdensome, regionally uneven, and overly dependent on individual recommendations. The goal is to create a more stable and predictable support structure.
However, the change has raised concerns regarding the practical implementation of this flexibility. Critics question how schools will manage situations where the demand for support exceeds available capacity, potentially forcing principals to prioritize certain students over others when resources are limited.
