Czech Government Moves to End Television Licence Fee, Aiming to Relieve Seniors

The Czech government has proposed abolishing the mandatory television and radio licence fee that households currently pay 205 CZK per month. The plan would shift funding for public broadcasters to the state budget, with the cost for each senior (over 65) estimated at 2,460 CZK annually. Oto Klempír, the government’s strategic communications envoy, highlighted that more than 1.5 million seniors would feel the impact of the change and stressed that the reform is intended to ease their household budgets.

Supporters argue the existing fee system is outdated and burdens families, while critics warn that financing public media wholly from the state could compromise editorial independence. Klempír countered that the new model aims to provide sufficient resources without increasing political pressure on broadcasters. The debate reflects broader discussions across Europe about how to fund public‑service media in the digital age.
