Czech Government Opposes ODS Bill to Boost Municipal Role in National Park Boards

Members of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) led by Jan Bureš have drafted a amendment to strengthen the participation of municipalities, regional authorities, and the Czech fire rescue service in the decision‑making bodies of national parks. The proposal would restructure park council votes into two groups – one comprising local officials, firefighters and possibly mountain service staff, and another made up of members appointed by the nature protection authority – with decisions requiring a majority in each group. It also introduces a two‑year term for council members.

The Czech government has rejected the amendment, arguing that it could undermine the core environmental management of the parks. The Ministry of the Interior criticised the plan as inappropriate for a government to create a body dealing with specialist nature‑protection matters. The Ministry of the Environment will be tasked with deciding on the proposals if the park councils cannot reach an agreement.

Supporters of the bill say it would give local governments a greater voice and prevent appointed members from outvoting municipal representatives, while opponents warn it could compromise conservation objectives.
