Czech economy outpaces EU average amid rising state debt

The Supreme Audit Office (SAO) reported that while the Czech economy grew by 2.6 percent last year, outpacing the EU average of 1.5 percent, the nation faces significant fiscal challenges. State debt has risen to 3.7 trillion CZK, and debt servicing costs reached 98 billion CZK last year, more than doubling since 2021.

Growth was primarily driven by increased household consumption and higher hours worked rather than productivity gains. The SAO warned that low labor productivity, high energy intensity, and an aging population threaten future competitiveness. Additionally, a budget deficit of 290.7 billion CZK was recorded last year, exceeding plans by nearly 50 billion CZK, partly due to lower-than-expected revenues from emission allowances.

Finance Minister Alena Schillerová has presented a budget proposal for next year that anticipates a deficit of approximately 389 billion CZK, which would be the second-highest in Czech history. The government aims to increase spending in sectors such as defense, transport, and social services while maintaining a policy of not raising taxes.
