Czech health officials warn of muscle loss from weight‑loss injection drugs

Modern injectable drugs originally developed for diabetes are now prescribed in the Czech Republic for obesity treatment. They suppress appetite by targeting hunger hormones, enabling rapid weight loss when used under medical supervision. Experts stress that the drugs can also cause loss of muscle mass if patients do not maintain adequate protein intake and exercise. One patient described the experience as, “I no longer think only about food,” but noted that without training the muscle loss risk is real. The treatment requires a prescription, close monitoring by doctors or obesity specialists, and can cost around 70,000 CZK per patient. Successful outcomes reported include drops of up to 26 kg, with most of the loss being fat rather than muscle when combined with physiotherapy, fitness training, and dietary adjustments. Physicians caution that discontinuation often leads to weight regain, emphasizing that injections are not a standalone solution.
