Czech healthcare programs increase medical student enrollment

The Czech Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, and the Association of Deans of Medical Faculties have reported positive results from government programs designed to increase the number of medical and healthcare professionals.

Since the approval of the long-term physician training support program in 2019, the number of general medicine students has increased by 30.9%. Annual enrollment has risen from an average of 1,680 students (during 2015–2018) to 2,220, which is expected to yield more than 350 additional graduates per year. This increase aims to rejuvenate the medical workforce and bolster capacity in critical areas.

Additionally, the first year of the program supporting non-medical healthcare professionals has seen a significant rise in interest. Enrollment for general nursing students has increased by nearly 40%. These initiatives are intended to address the challenges of an aging healthcare workforce and meet the growing demand for geriatric, palliative, and long-term care services.
