Czech healthcare struggles with digital technology reimbursement and integration
The Czech healthcare system faces challenges in integrating digital technologies due to a lack of established reimbursement mechanisms. Antonín Hlavinka, deputy director of Všeobecná zdravotní pojišťovna, noted that while telemedicine and artificial intelligence are already being used in clinical settings, there is a legislative gap preventing these innovations from being covered by public health insurance.
A new project aims to establish procedures for evaluating the clinical benefit and value of these technologies to create appropriate payment models. This is particularly critical for AI in radiodiagnostics and telemedicine services, which currently lack data-driven reimbursement frameworks in the Czech environment.
Simultaneously, private medical practitioners report difficulties with digital implementation. The Koalice soukromých lékařů (Coalition of Private Doctors) highlights that while many offices use electronic documentation, the lack of universal data sharing and interoperability forces many to maintain paper backups. Private specialists are also calling for subsidies to cover the high costs of digitalization, noting that such support has not yet been offered to them in the same way it has been for hospitals.
