Germany's record heatwave triggers travel bans and health alerts

A sweeping heatwave across Central Europe has pushed temperatures in Germany to unprecedented levels, with the Deutsche Wetterdienst (DWD) recording a provisional 41.5 °C in Möckern‑Drewitz and forecasts of up to 42 °C in parts of the country. The heatwave has broken regional records in Berlin, Brandenburg, Bavaria, Saxony‑Anhalt and Thuringia, while thunderstorms and heavy rain are also expected.

Health officials warn that the extreme temperatures pose a severe risk, especially for the elderly, children, pregnant women and people with pre‑existing conditions. The “silent killer” effect of heat‑induced dehydration, cardiovascular strain and heat stroke has led to a surge in medical calls, fire‑brigade warnings and calls for better cooling infrastructure in care homes.

Transport operators have responded to the heat stress on infrastructure. Deutsche Bahn and other rail firms advised passengers to avoid non‑essential long‑distance and regional trips, and the private operator National Express halted six regional lines in North‑Rhine‑Westphalia for six hours. Senior homes in Krefeld, Dormagen and other cities evacuated residents after indoor temperatures rose above safe levels.

Similar record‑breaking temperatures were reported in Austria (38.6 °C in Bad Deutsch‑Altenburg), Denmark (36.6 °C) and Slovakia (near‑40 °C), underscoring the continent‑wide nature of the event.
